UEFA Levies Charges Against Roma, Sevilla, and Mourinho for Europa League Final Controversy

UEFA has issued a series of charges against Roma, Sevilla, and their manager Jose Mourinho following their conduct during the Europa League final on Wednesday. Mourinho's altercation with referee Anthony Taylor in the car park, as well as his post-match comments, has resulted in charges of insulting and/or abusive language towards a match official. The ill-tempered game, which saw Taylor surrounded by players and an attack on him at the airport, has drawn widespread condemnation. UEFA has taken action to discipline both teams for their behavior during the final.

"Disciplinary proceedings have been initiated in accordance with Article 55 of the UEFA Disciplinary Regulations (DR) following the UEFA Europa League final match between Sevilla FC and AS Roma (1-1) played on May 31, 2023, in Budapest, Hungary," stated UEFA in a released statement.

Charges against Sevilla FC include invasion of the field of play, throwing of objects, lighting of fireworks, improper conduct of the team. AS Roma faces charges of throwing objects, lighting of fireworks, acts of damage, crowd disturbances, improper conduct of the team, and insulting/abusive language against a match official (Mr. José Mourinho).

"The UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body (CEDB) will decide on the matter in due course."

Mourinho had expressed dissatisfaction with the number of yellow cards issued by Taylor during the game. However, former top official Mark Halsey came to Taylor's defense, condemning the behavior of both sets of players.

"The actions of Jose Mourinho, the Roma players, and the Sevilla players cannot be condoned. Their behavior was absolutely appalling. These actions are witnessed around the world, and it is concerning for young children to see such behavior," he stated on talkSPORT.
